Design A Simple Header for Your Next Google Quiz

Distance learning is on everyone’s mind. It brings up a lot of questions for teachers and one of them is–will I be able to recreate the classroom magic via a computer screen?

Sigh. I don’t know. While digitizing reading quizzes I’ve been trying to add things to make assignments more visually appealing. It’s a small thing, but absent bulletin boards, pillows, quiet places, etc. we’re really relying on the small things.

One fun thing to do is design a themed header for Google quizzes (through Google Forms). I did this for my The Girl Who Drank the Moon and Charlotte’s Web quizzes. I like the way they turned out!

I used Keynote to design a simple header, then used the headers for collections of quizzes. Here’s how:

Use Keynote to Create a Header for Google Forms

  1. In Keynote, go to Document, then Slide Size, then Custom Slide Size.

2. Set dimensions to 1600w X 400h.

3. Now your slide will look like this!

4. Insert images and text.

5. Export to a JPEG. Go to File, Export To, then Images.

6. Make sure JPEG is selected, select Next, and save the images to your desktop.

Import Header into Google Forms

7. In Google Forms, select Customize Theme. It’s the one that looks like an artist’s palette.

8. In the popup window, select Upload, then Browse.

9. Select the JPEG you exported to your desktop. Select choose.

10. Crop if you like. Select Done.

11. Voila! You have a header. Google Forms will select a background color that coordinates with your header.

12. It’s not a reading nook or a story time rug, but it’s a little better than the generic template.
