Practice may make perfect, but repeated practice gets old quickly. How do we keep our kids and students reading day after day? Teachers have lots of strategies for keeping reading fresh. One way is to encourage kids to have some fun when choosing a PLACE to read.
At school, we fill our classrooms with props for comfortable reading–pillows, bean bags, camping chairs. Students can choose silly places to read (underneath the teacher’s desk is a favorite). All of this helps break up the monotony that comes with any daily task.
Here are some ideas, kids can read…
- Under a tree.
- Next to an open window.
- In the kitchen, while something yummy bakes.
- In bed.
- Under the table.
- ON the table.
- Inside a blanket fort.
- In the dark, with a flashlight.
- Outside.
- In the bathtub.
- With a pet/sibling/relative/sitter.
- On the phone, with a friend.
- Out loud, to a sibling.
- Under the bed.
- In a closet.
Of course there are other places–a parent or sibling’s bed, in a park (if it’s open), etc. I’ve put together a free Read-At-Home Bingo Board so kiddos can track of the fun places where they’ve read.
Distance learning is challenging, but it also presents some unique opportunities. Parents can’t replicate the classroom at home, but they can do some things that a teacher couldn’t do in the classroom (like building a blanket fort!). Where are your kiddos reading during distance learning?
