How to Keep Your Toddler Occupied While Staying At Home

Have you ever felt such longing for a public playground? Something about seeing the above play structure wrapped up in CAUTION tape makes me feel nostalgic for those halcyon days when we could simply…walk to the park! Fortunately there are plenty of things to do while practicing social distancing, here are some of our favorites:

Sink or Float?

Rice Play

Sink or Float? This one is simple: Fill a container full of water, gather up water-resistant toys, let your toddler throw the toys in the water and determine whether they sink or float. This quickly turns into water play (the sink/float aspect is less interesting than splashing), but that’s okay.

Rice Play Fill a container with rice and gather toys, measuring cups, and other pouring devices (a funnel is fun!). Let your toddler pile, plow and play, then have him/her help sweep up afterward.

Explore the Neighborhood

Hide the Hearts

Explore the Neighborhood Since go-to activities (like playgrounds) are off-limits, go for a walk and explore places you would normally overlook. We looked at construction vehicles up close, and “climbed” the roots of a giant tree.

Hide the Hearts (Scavenger Hunt) Hide ten of something, then let your little one find them. For us, this started with an Easter egg hunt. Now we hide these little paper hearts. Other things to hide: buttons, paper muffin liners, Duplos.

Do you have a toddler at home? How’ve you been keeping them occupied?
